Project Overview

The Little River Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project will be located 14-kilometres north of Victoria’s Little River, near Lara and Geelong. It will provide a reliable and flexible storage solution, by charging at times of low demand, and releasing energy into the grid at times of high demand. Once operational, the project will be one of the state’s largest Battery Energy Storage Systems, with a capacity of 350 MW / 1,400 MWh. It will connect directly to existing 220kV network infrastructure, reducing the need for additional works and minimising the project’s footprint.

In September 2025, the Little River BESS was awarded under the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), recognising the role it will play in the renewable energy transition. Under the CIS, the project will prioritise local content and procurement opportunities, working with regional suppliers to ensure the investment delivers lasting economic benefits.

The project will also provide enduring community benefits, establishing a Community Benefit Fund to support initiatives such as scholarships, training programs, and STEM education pathways. ACEnergy is working with First Nations partners to develop employment pathways, subcontracting opportunities, and long-term benefit sharing options.

Working with the community

We continue to collaborate with the local community to design a project and a benefit sharing program that delivers meaningful outcomes for everyone.

Community Benefit Fund

To create lasting social and economic benefits, we have established a $1.5 million Community Benefit Fund for the life of the project. Eligible initiatives may include:

  • Community grants and investments
  • Scholarships, educational or vocational training opportunities
  • Local procurement, jobs and skills development
  • First Nations benefit sharing initiatives.

The Community Benefit Fund will be guided by the Community Reference Group (CRG) and is expected to open annual funding rounds. Funding will commence around the start of construction and we will advertise details ahead of time.

Community Reference Group (CRG)

Following a public expression of interest process, we formed a Community Reference Group (CRG) in mid-2025 to help shape and implement the $1.5 million Community Benefit Fund. We are grateful to our seven CRG members, who represent a diverse cross-section of the community, including environmental and conservation groups, historical societies, community facilities, emergency services, education providers, and local businesses. Their expertise and enthusiasm ensure the Fund is in capable hands.

The CRG held its first meeting in October 2025, focusing on feedback for the draft Community Benefit Fund Guidelines. Their insights were valuable, and ACEnergy is now revising the Guidelines based on this input.
