Project Overview

The Joel Joel BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is set to be located approximately 23 kilometres east of Stawell in Victoria’s Joel Joel. By providing a reliable and flexible storage solution, it will help balance supply and demand, integrating more renewable energy into the grid and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The BESS will also provide critical grid services such as frequency regulation and peak load management.

The strategic location of the Joel Joel BESS enables direct connection into the existing 20kV network infrastructure at the Bulgana Terminal Station. This reduces the need to build new infrastructure and minimises impacts on the surrounding environment and communities.

The project will bring economic benefits to the region, with upwards of 70 jobs created during construction and four full-time jobs once operational.

Working with the community

Our approach aims to mitigate any project impacts and maximise opportunities for local communities.

We are working with neighbours and local residents, Northern Grampians Shire Council, and Barengi Gadjin Land Council to identify and address potential impacts and opportunities early.

We are committed to building a positive legacy, together with the Joel Joel community and surrounding localities.

To deliver lasting social and economic benefits, we will establish a Community Benefit Fund for the duration of the project. Initiatives eligible for the Community Benefit Fund may include:

  • Community grants and investments
  • Scholarships, educational or vocational training
  • Local procurement, jobs and training
  • First Nations benefit sharing.

We understand the significance of co-designing the Community Benefit Fund to ensure we support meaningful community-driven activities that are inclusive, and respond to local needs and priorities. We will work closely with Council and the local community as we develop and implement the Community Benefit Fund.

We will also keep the community informed of project progress and impacts throughout the project lifecycle. Our project team welcomes your feedback and is available to answer any questions.
