Yanco Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

ACEnergy is seeking approval to construct a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Yanco to support New South Wales' clean energy transition. Located 1 km southwest of Yanco on Houghton Road, approximately 5 km south of Leeton in the Leeton Shire Government Area, this project is strategically located 270 km west of Canberra and 500 km from Sydney.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Location: 1 km southwest of Yanco, 5 km south of Leeton
  • Capacity: 250MW / 1000MWh standalone BESS
  • Connection: Underground transmission line to the TransGrid substation

Key Benefits of the Yanco BESS

Supporting New South Wales' Clean Energy Transition

The Yanco BESS is a critical project aimed at assisting New South Wales in its transition to cleaner energy sources. By integrating a large-scale BESS, the project will contribute to the state's efforts to rapidly reduce carbon emissions and ensure a dependable and cost-effective power supply.

Enhancing Grid Reliability and Affordability

The Yanco BESS has the potential to significantly enhance grid reliability and affordability in New South Wales. With its substantial capacity, the BESS can provide essential grid services such as frequency regulation and peak load management, contributing to a more stable and efficient electricity supply.

By connecting to the TransGrid substation via an underground transmission line, the project minimises construction impact and leverages existing infrastructure to ensure seamless integration with the energy grid.

Once completed, the Yanco BESS will have the capacity to power approximately 80,000 homes, making a substantial contribution to the clean energy transition.

Development Timeline

  1. Land Signed: The land for the Yanco BESS was secured in 2023.
  2. Development Application: The development application was submitted in 2024 and is currently being assessed. Approval is expected by Q1 2025.
  3. Connection Agreement: The connection agreement with the existing 132kV network infrastructure is expected in Q2 2025 and will ensure seamless integration with the energy grid.
  4. Construction Start: Construction is expected to commence in Q2 2025.
  5. Energisation: The Yanco BESS is expected to be energised by late 2026, at which point it will begin providing critical energy storage services to NSW.
